The number of companies working with foreign countries has quadrupled since the beginning of the economic crisis. More and more companies are in the Malaga province looking outside of Spain in search of new markets.

The difficult economic situation in the country has provided the stimulus that some companies had to start elsewhere. At least 50 companies are engaged in activities outside Spain, and since 2005 have seen a growing interest in exporting their products or to open branches in other countries.

This process of internationalization is strongly linked to the economic crisis, says Teresa Saez, CEO of Extenda. This is evidenced by the fact that some companies have decided to go outside Spain precisely because of the downturn in the national market. The positive experiences of those who have taken the step are a further factor to encourage others companies.

Teresa points out that there are grants available and some projects do not require such a large investment. Money need not be an obstacle to the companies that are concerned about the financial aspect.

The growing interest and the economic situation have forced Extenda to adapt their programs, including more financial help in 2012.

Internationalization continues to be a major issue of debate for small and medium enterprises in the province of Malaga. Over the past five years the number of companies in the province of Malaga who export their goods and services increased by 40 percent in new markets outside Spain.
