Spain’s interior ministry, Ministerio del Interior, proposes to implement cuts in the police unit working against the Mafia and organized crime on the Costa del Sol.

The Spanish police services that go over the long name Grupo Especial de Respuesta contra el Crimen Organizado de la Policia Nacional but shortened GRECO was established in 2005 to identify and work against the Mafia and organized crime such as along the Costa del Sol.

Savings requirements GRECO motivated by economic hardship and high levels of debt carried by the National Police, Cuerpo Nacional de Policia.

Spanish police have huge debts. These include 175 million Euros in liabilities related to electricity, telephone, water or fuel for police cars. A further twelve million Euros related to additional allowances for police officers.

The Spain Government wants to undertake a review of police structures in Spain and how to continue the fight against the Mafia and organized crime.
